How does in vitro fertilization (IVF) work?

In today’s world, medical advancements have allowed us to overcome various challenges on our journey to parenthood. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is one such groundbreaking technique that has brought hope and joy to countless couples struggling with infertility. At Care 24 Fertility Center, we understand the importance of family, and we are dedicated to guiding you through the IVF process. And we will explore the intricate workings of IVF, offering insights into each step of the procedure and how it can help you fulfill your dream of becoming a parent.

What is Infertility?

Before delving into the intricacies of IVF, it’s essential to understand the concept of infertility. Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive naturally after a year of regular, unprotected intercourse. This can be result from various factors, including:

  • Ovulatory Disorders: Irregular or absent ovulation.
  • Tubal Issues: Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes that hinder the egg’s journey to the uterus.
  • Uterine Abnormalities: Structural problems in the uterus.
  • Male Factor Infertility: The Low sperm count, poor sperm motility, or abnormal sperm morphology.
  • The Unexplained Infertility: When no specific cause can be identified.
  • IVF: A Ray of Hope

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a reproductive technology that offers hope to couples facing infertility issues. The IVF process involves the fertilization of an egg and sperm outside the body in a laboratory setting. Once the fertilized embryo reaches a certain stage of development, it is transferred to the woman’s uterus, where it can implant and grow into a healthy pregnancy.

The IVF Process

1.Ovulation Induction

The IVF process typically begins with ovarian stimulation. And, Fertility medications are administered to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs instead of the usual one.
Monitoring through blood tests and ultrasounds ensures that the eggs are developing properly.

2. Egg Retrieval

So, When the eggs are mature, a minor surgical procedure called egg retrieval is performed. A thin needle is inserted through the vaginal wall to aspirate the eggs from the ovaries.

The collected eggs are then placed in a specialized culture medium in the laboratory.
Sperm Collection

On the same day as egg retrieval, a sperm sample is collected from the male partner or a sperm donor.

The sperm is prepared and combined with the eggs in the laboratory, initiating the fertilization process.

3. Fertilization

In the laboratory, the eggs and sperm are cultured together, allowing fertilization to occur naturally.Once fertilization is successful, the resulting embryos are monitored for development over the next few days.

4. Embryo Selection

After several days, the embryologist evaluates the quality and viability of the embryos.
The best-quality embryos are selected for transfer, while the remaining embryos may be cryopreserved (frozen) for future use.

5.Embryo Transfer

The selected embryo(s) are transferred into the woman’s uterus. This is so relatively simple and painless procedure, similar to a Pap smear.
The hope is that the transferred embryo will implant in the uterine lining and result in a pregnancy.

6. Waiting for Pregnancy

Following the embryo transfer, a waiting period of about two weeks occurs to determine if pregnancy has been achieved.
A blood test to measure hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) levels is conducted, which indicates whether pregnancy has occurred.

Pregnancy and Beyond

If the pregnancy test is positive, monitoring and prenatal care will begin to ensure the health and well-being of both the mother and the developing baby.
